Any quality walking / climbing sock. Try thin bridgedale liner socks and then something medium thickness over them.

I bought thermal socks from matalan at £5 a pair and bought a pair of waterproof boots that go halfway up my leg.  I used them last winter and they work great.  One of the most important things to remember when keeping your hands and feet warm is layering without it being too tight.  If its too tight you'll cut off your circulation and then it doesnt matter how many layers you have on, you will be freezing.

Of second hand woolen ex-army socks off Huddersfield
Second hand market a few weeks ago.75 pence a pair.
Really warm and comfortable. When I`m there again I
Might get another 2 pairs at that price .
