My new accountant has just claimed that i cannot claim for my renault clio as a work vehicle because it is not a commercial vehicle. This is different to what I have known to be the case for many years, but is he right???
Does anyone else drive and claim tax against a normal car for their window cleaning?
By commercial vehicle, I assume he means van, So im looking at a kangoo (cant afford berlingo), but even they are hard to find without a million miles, so I am just hoping that my accountant is wrong in this matter - can anyone else clarify?

Double check with your accountant or ask another one. What he might mean is that its not in your interest to claim it as it is a "car" you can only claim a limited amount and plus you have to pay income tax on its "personal use" even if you state its only for business use. You can always contact DVLA and reclasify it as a van. I'm pretty sure all thats needed is to block off the rear windows but double check with DVLA.

On a side note, can you claim 100% of what you pay out on a company van?

NO...... If you buy a van you only claim the depreciation each year and NOT the initial cost. You can claim any interest in the payments made if you buy it on credit. If you lease or hire a van then all the payments are 100% tax deductable.

i claim 40p per mile, this covers every thing to to with my vehicle. its value, insurance, tax, mot, petrol and maitenance.
i done this when i had a clio biaritz
if i do more than 8000 business miles i get an extra £1000+ towards my expences (tax deductable), which is great. but to do this you have to do a lot of milahge and have a vehicle lower than the value of £3000 to benifit. if you have an expensive van just use the vehicle expence reciepts
i dont see the need of accountants, put it through and if you get pulled back just say i thought i was allowed.
but i am sure you can put a car through cos it is still a vehile you use.
hope this helps

A car might be a vehicle that you use but there are different tax rules associated with it. If you are employed and have a company car you are taxed on it as a perk. If you have a company van then you are not taxed. There are different tax rules for different things and how you put them down on your tax return. I have put a games console through as "advertising" because it was for the school raffle and as it was the top prize I got loads of advertising from it via school newsletters, name on all the raffle tickets etc. The time my accountant saves me more than covers her costs. Anything from the Inland Rev goes straight to her and she sorts it. £300per yr well spent as she probably saves me more than that in Tax payments as well as not having to fill in those forms.

when i had a picasso that i used for work my accountant told me that i would be better off charging the business for using the car. eg. xx pence per mile. this way you'll get more off.
