Hi all, after being made redundant I decided to try my hand at window cleanong which i did for a while many years ago. Ive canvassed around 5 days and have managed to get 48 customers. I had a problem today when  i was doing this 6 bed house, when i went around the edges with cloth the rubber around the window sort of smudged black all over the upvc frames when i tried ot cleanit it just semd to get worse. it took me ages to make it ok. i want happy witht he frames but I didnt do anythink different than i have all week. why would this happen?

thanks in advance

I always thought it was the rubber seal degrading, especially from sunlight. It's a common problem over here. I use the scrim & a wash usually gets most of it out. I used to detail with a scraper to save the cloth, but it was too time consuming.

yes that is what I thought as well as it is usually on older windows.

just wipe the frames before it dries and it usually cleans up easily.

And whatever you do - don't get the black on the white UPVC frame - otherwise you'll have a whole new can of worms.

Just wipe the sill and be done with the window, you are a window cleaner, not a painter and decorator, haha. But in all seriousness, as long as the window is clean and the sill it clean, most customers don't even look at the frames of the window, it is a waste of time cleaning them, it slows you down and at the end of the day, makes you lose money.

One of the reasons you get black marks are a deterioration of the rubber seals,  Soap and water add to the issue! WFP is not harmful to rubber therefore no black runs.

Son of Wagga.

I don't agree.

Frames are important. We are window cleaners not glass cleaners.

Customers expect a complete job not half a job.

yeah completly agree with stoked and properjob, all of the window should be cleaned not just the bit you think the customer might notice. I think this brings you back to the other thread on here of how many of you do a proper job?

I will clean the frames........ if they pay me.

On my round, 99% of customers just have their glass and sills cleaned and they are happy with that. How do i know? Because I give them the choice to have frames cleaned from the beginning with a simple charge of double. So a £4 house becomes £10 with frames etc. Nearly all dont bother with frames through their own choice, and others bother as and when it suits them.

The customer is allways right  Grin

About the black seals degrading though I do find them a pain. I have found that this mostly happens on the council house windows in my area. Must be something to do with rubber used to make those type of windows.

I with the frame cleaners. If you're using WFP then it's hardly hard work... The number of customers I've picked up because the previous window cleaner never touched the frames is unreal.

I have picked up work because I have been seen to clean the frames. My father always did, so I just continued to do so.

Recently a customer was boasting to a visiting friend.

VF. Look at your window cleaner, cleaning all the frames.

C. I know I told you I had a good one.

VF. Mine is a lazy devil and can't be bothered.

VF. (to Me) Do you go to Tiverton?

ME. Yes every 6 weeks.

VF. Ok I will cancell the other guy, and bring out my address in a few minutes.

This new job was priced at £30. I clean it every 6 weeks. Well worth cleaning frames I think.
