Best you can do to start with is make sure that your site meta tags are defined properly in the html of your website.  Something like the following -

DESCRIPTION
<meta name="description" content="Your site description here.  Don't go over 150 characters."/>

KEYWORDS
<meta name="keywords" content="your, keywords, here, seperated, by, commas, don't, do, more, than 7, to, 10, keywords"/>

AUTHOR (optional)
<meta name="author" content="Your Name or Company Here">

Then submit to google using the google.co.uk/webmaster tools which verify your site for google.

Aside from that, submit your site to as many free indexes as possible (be prepared for follow up sales calls) such as windercleanerfinder.co.uk / free index.co.uk / misterwhat.co.uk / zettai.net.  If you're prepared to pay then yell.com isn't a bad option to go for to boost visibility.

Hi, Circyn is spot on. You need to make sure that you are putting the right info in when adding metatags etc. And Google free ads and find and sign up for just about every free online advertising websites you can. If you do about 4 o5 a night (40 mins online) you phone will not stop ringing but just give them all the same short answer and they will call two or three times then give up. But your own website will gain status and work its way up the pages faster.

I know it is more or less the same as what Circyn has already said, but it is the only way with paying £100s of pounds (no need).
