Hello. This is my first post and i'm looking for some advice.I'm fed up with bits of paper and i want a small portable device that will hold details of my round, let me mark customers as paid and show me if they still owe me for the last clean.I don't want to take my laptop out with me and i'd like to keep the cost at a maximum of £400.
Any suggestions.

I use a half way house. I run Window Cleaner Pro on my PC and print the rounds out. I find paper easier to deal with while out working. Once I get home, I update everything on WCP from the paperwork, a process that takes a couple of minutes.

I use an Apple iPod Touch (like the iPhone but without the Phone part) and Bento database.  This syncs up with the database on my laptop at the end of the day so all my records are updated at home and on the device.  You can get the iPod Touch from £165 (check out the Apple refurb store).

To be honest I'm a pen & paper guy. Just keep a clipboard type folder in van with all my work sheets in. List all customers for each day down the side & about 20 columns across where I can put in the date. Then I have a simple system of a circle when cleaned, and a tick inside it when paid. That way just a glance & I can see circle=done & not paid, circle & tick- done & paid. Simples!

Sorry that may not answer your question!

I use George software - may change to Aworka soon. This can be kept on your home computer & also used on a pda out in the field. You can also print off from your computer.

I use my laptop to print off a worksheet for the day and put a tick at the left of the house number when cleaned and a tick at the right side when paid.I'm just getting fed up with all the bits of paper.I'd like to see at a glance who hasn't paid for their last clean.I've thought about taking my laptop out but the battery won't last all day and the time it takes to boot up makes it impractical to switch on and off all the time.Could get a better laptop i suppose.I'll have a look at George and a pda. Thanks again for replies.

SURELY EXCEL IS THE SIMPLEST Huh?

It is simple initially - but keeping records for the last 6 years (which HMRC can potentially require from you) for customers, each charge and payment transaction, expenses etc can soon become unmanageable within Excel.  To manage this stuff effectively, to reduce work for year end tax returns and to show HMRC you've made the best endeavours to maintain good records (which helps reduce fines should you ever be unfortunate enough to receive one) you really need to have a tool fit for the job.
