I knocked on about 180 doors yesterday during the day, got about 90 answers and got 7 confirmed jobs and another 8 very interested. What do you think? i was happy enough with that. First day out, nothing better to do than canvass.

I find in my personal experience, canvassing just in the evening will give you the same amount of customers as a whole days door knocking. I go out at 5.30 and finish for 7-30. the best I got in the two hours was 11 new customers the worst 0.....but it does depend on the area.
When I first started I used to door knock in the evening, do what I got the following day and then Knock again etc etc.
Hope this helps and good luck
Kev

Thanks, JohnBoy, Kev_r,
jobs are worth 20 Euro each, have not made any arrangements past the first cleaning, will do so when work is done I guess.
Will take suggestion of canvassing in the evenings, am foot weary and get too many people not home during the day. Total so far 16 jobs, called to 300 but at least half of them out.
maybe time for plan B? :-/

if you find a new build estate and use the line 'hi i'm im the window cleaner for this area would you like done fortnightly or monthly?' they then dont hesitate and give you one of them as an answer.I find it works great, new estate near me i used this approach on 175 houses and got 123 of them £7 per visit fortnightly, remember if they say monthly that makes it more expensive.

Crystal, fine if you have the nerve to say that. I know a local guy who cleans commercial buildings as soon as the company moves in, he then goes to the secretary, tells her the windows have been cleaned, and hands her the bill. Most times they pay up thinking the boss has arranged it. If they question it and refuse to pay, it has only cost him the time to do the clean. It takes a bit of nerve but he has built up a very successful business. Lorconblue, you will find that you will pick up many of the neighbors when they see you are coming round regularly. If you have the time do the new customers on a Saturday morning when most people are at home and will see you working. Peter

i know it takes a bit of bottle to be so blunt with them peter but if you approach them with a smile and cheery attitude it nomally comes up trumps! p.s. i sold cars for 15yrs proir to wc'ing so i dont really understand the word 'no',i just treat every door like my first.

Aughrim, a small village in Wicklow, (50 miles south of Dublin) but near enough to a decent size town, where, I got the work.

I found that saturday afternoons was a good time to canvass (people don't like to be disturbed during Eastenders etc) and don't forget to take a book and mark down the people who are out so you know to return.
