£265 is a bit of a rip off mate, but I can see other councils following suit, think my last 3 year ones were around £150,I have 2 employees so £450,will be a lot more than that when it's time for renewal me thinks.I wouldn't mind if they used a very small proportion of the money they raised to weed out the ones(and there are a lot)who don't bother with licenses,in a way I don't really blame them as they know nothing is ever done about it.

Hi everyone!...I'm Bryan and am new to this forum. I've been in biz for 12 years now and find this a very interesting subject. It's ironically the name of my biz first of all. Grin
I got my start in 1999 and was everything described to a fault. I didn't even have a car! I even started the service because I couldn't find anything else that allowed for my degenerative lifestyle at the time if you know what I mean. Shocked . Well fast forward and make a long but probably colorful story short, I got my sh*t together and went legit.

Now in my experience I've since been burned by rogues or as you call them cowboy window cleaners. I find they have a little sting for the short term but never last. I'm probably 1 in a 1000. My business is built on the relationships I've established with my clients fortunately, and the rogues can't usually reach up 30 feet either...lol.

It may sound odd, but I've come across guys living in the street cleaning little storefronts and actually given them some equipment so that they may do a better job. Maybe I'm crazy but karma points always seem to be in my favor. I have an attitude of gratitude that I've managed to survive all these years and have a deep understanding of the people that are living hand to mouth.

However I'm not referring to people who are ripping off people out there. They even deserve the title cowboy window cleaner!

Anyway that's my 2 cents...

p.s. Great site!

He makes a few broad statements that aren't true and are his opinions not backed up with fact. Sounds to me he doesn't like his competition much

Agreed - we have many properties under £6 (simply due to the small size such as flats with only a couple of windows).  It's all part of the round though - we have properties ranging from such a small size up to very large ones with big conservatories.  Methinks the man is ranting a wee bit as he's getting frustrated with lack of work / competition with other methods.

I do agree that customers should be able to ensure that they have a fully insured window cleaner though.  If the cleaner is an honest one I doubt they'd have a problem showing the customer their insurance documents (I presume you'd have to do this with some commercial work anyway?? I don't have any yet so I don't know!).

liscences are a good idea as long as it does not become a tool for the fat cats to make an easy living. the cost will have to absorbed by us, the idea that the customers will not mind paying extra for genuine wc's just won't happen. i can see loads of cowboy  training companies starting up to train wc's and the cost will be  hundreds to get a liscence and the training will take second place.the money they generate through the number game will be king. Wain,in my opinion nothing is free in life, you always pay at some stage. My experiences with the training companies i have been involved with, all be it in the building industry is that  they are only interested in bums on seats not serious training, they encourage legislation because it makes them money, these are my experiences and thoughts. I got myself CRB checked which in away is a form of liscencing and most cowboys would not go to the effort to have this done, so maybe something on these lines could be brought in, remember we do come into contact with families and the elderly.any body got thoughts on this. was it from impact43 or something like that, if so it is free well apart from the days lost working, to be honest I would do it if I could but they don't get funding for scotland, the reason it is free is they get funding for every individual that completes the training

Firstly, not impressed with the guy in the article. Appears to be full of Cr*P.

I got myself CRB checked, because I thought it would prove my integrity, but I have never been asked for it. I have insurance which of course is just plain common sense but never been asked to show that either.

Customers are interested in two things imho, The price and if you visit regulary.

you are right the customers look for regularity first then price, but for me my CRB has got me work as i work with some care companies which ask for it, i Have had a few of my domestic customers comment on it ,so there is some milage, as for the chap in the article i think he has got a bit excited and carried away, i price for me not any one else, what other people charge is irrelevant. my customers choose me because they like and trust me, if you  go that extra mile for the customer eventually you will have a good round making good money. I agree with you,....Ian.

Its that personal touch. If people like you as a person, you go regulary and dont rip them off then they tend not to change wc.
