I really need some help with canvassing, I think im ok when im actually talking to the customer, and the little bit i have done i suppose has been successful, My problem is i seem to talk myself out of canvasing an area, "the windows look clean" Well established estate, probably have a window cleaner. Could you more experienced lads tell me what way you approach a potential area, if your told  there is a windie does some houses do you carry on , or move on. Gents i need a bit of advice as i really seem to struggle, and from the new guys am i the only one who feels like this and what sort of success rate do they get

lol i love this.

every area you'll go in will have one window cleaner at least. dont worry about it just canvas anyway, if its a  dung window cleaner your doing the street a favour, if its a good window cleaner, then you dont want to undercut, but doesnt mean he does the entire street.

i've canvased area's that the local window cleaner was working in, i simply ask him what houses he does and he can either tell you and you avoid or he can be an bottom then you undercut him, its up to you, along you dont undercut you self/or go out your way to undercut him. the best stratgy is to befriend

look don't stop your self from canvasing. its the part of the job thats the most important. you can fluff arround this but if you do it will cost you more in the long run. if you get it out the way then you'll only have to do it now and then

alittle tip in canvasing, your going to get NO's when you knock so i make a game out of it and try for 10 NO's each hour, tell you want 8 is the most i've hit in an hour, its fun  Grin

Im not surprised it made you laugh, i felt pretty stupid when i wrote it,  I know exactly what you mean though i think i have been fluffing around and making excuses, so if you came across an estate with say a hundred houses would you just keep going at them all regardless of how many no you got, i like your tip
different way of looking at thing

yer sure, why not. only the person in the house can deside if they want you and your the one that has to show the reason why they'd want you.

the more you knock the doors the better you get, write down reason why the customer would want you. even write down who your customer is, age's  occupation types. old young newly married. the reason for this is if you come across these people then you know its your target and therefore react better to the situation, ie if they are old you can say your reliable and trust worthy and dont mind doing little things to help. talk to them like they are your own gran or grandad, it helps Smiley say your there to take over the job that needs doing that saves them from doing (dont say that they cant do they dont want to feel helpless).

its all about the wording and how you say it in the long run the more you say your script the more it with adapt its self to situations

ok another tip let say you see a house that you know your never going to get well listen the this its called a burn, you knock the door and you give it everything you got and if they say still well their loss and you learnt alot, it give you a kind of rush also lol  Grin

I have just started up like you. I actually quite enjoy canvassing, once I get going. But like you, I have found myself easily disuaded from continuing to canvass a street when I come across a succession of people who tell me that they already have a window cleaner. I even managed to knock on a window cleaners door the other day. He told me that he does all the houses in that area. Strangely, I got a customer just a few days previous who lives about 8 houses away from him!!. I am just going to plough on and try not to let the doubts creep in!!...There are a lot of windows out there to be cleaned and I am sure most areas have gaps.

i always canvassed from the back of the estate first working my way to the front. most window cleaners start at the front and when they get the no thank yous they assume it is a waste of time and give up. as a result the back of the estate rarely gets canvassed and that is where you are most likely to get the yes pleases.

I canvassed for two and a half hours in a local village today. There were plenty of people telling me that they already have a window cleaner. I still managed to pick up 5 new customers plus 2 potentials. I was quite pleased with that. I am presuming the more customers I get then the more word of mouth referrals I will get (so long as I do a good job). I must admit, I havent had any success at all with my leaflets...not one phone call to date. I definitely think canvassing is the best way.
