Hi guys, and Happy New Year.

Just wondering how much work you have lost last year due to not collecting the money per clean, when you should have?  I hear a lot from window cleaners that is the most popular cause of loosing work.  Customers just don't realise it has been that long since they paid when you ask them for 3 or 4 times the cleaning rate.

Feel free to comment on any other cause of loosing work on a regular basis.

i put 3-5, don't really know Huh? but it mainly happens with me because i don't really collect anymore, they send it, if they don't send, i stop till they do.
main reasons for losing work are non payment, anti wfp, financial trouble, moving house, me not wanting to do the job! not necessarily in that order Grin

I do not collect.  My feeling is that they should send me the payment via internet banking or cheque, If they require me to go back and collect i would but knowbody ever asks. If they do not pay after 2 cleans i send them and invoice to remind them, I sometimes will do a 3rd clean if they are normally ok payers. I then dont clean them till they pay i will send them a few reminders to pay. if they dont pay i never go back as i feel they are time wasters and i look for someone who wants there windows cleaned and will pay me.

I have put 3 - 5 at a guess. Had a few complain too but like I say to them I have put a slip through to let you know the windows have been done, on it is my online bank details my address phone number and the amount owed. They could at any time have made payment and also had the option of putting the money to one side. I refuse to travel 10 miles to collect £5 so if everyone else pays there is no collection thus it is there bad money management that leaves them with a larger bill.

Good post, collecting is a pain, i have lost quite a few last year
due to not collecting, it has got to be for me, the worst part of
window cleaning. Sad
I have got some that pay by cheuqe, bank transfer but most want
collected, and the last thing i want to do after cleaning for
eight hours is go collecting for 2 hours.

I think the numbers would be higher for new customers, but it is very rare it happens now because wasters have been replaced and dumped

ive lost 10 through people moving on and not telling me and  me still cleaning but there 6 monthly rentals 4 from financial restraints still see them and they always nod and there windows are dirty so i will do them when they ask for extra and they understand
1 to 2  non collecting  3 through complaints about water  damaging paintwork and cracking wood frames  2 wanting to see me up ladders and not standing on the floor with a big long pole squirting water on the windows  Huh?

pretty sad reply   however   ive picked 39 customers up without nocking doors every time i lose one i pick 1 to 2 up  Grin

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote, and all the input in the posts.

Stu, I never found that to be the case, I always had a problem when the money mounted up.  Not so much them thinking you were trying to con them, more a case of them thinking it was to much money to be giving away for window cleaning.  They didn't look at it that it was say 3x£6 or £18, they would just think £18 for window cleaning.  I would think it would be more of a problem now in this economic climate, than it was when I cleaned windows.  If I was window cleaning now I would try and make sure it didn't mount up.

I usually let it go to 3 times ,and if I don't catch them the 3rd time,I politely ask that they post it to me,when I put the note through the door ,to say I have been.
I have dumped a few this year, the ones that tell me to leave them out for the winter, and start again in spring.
If they say that,I just say"sorry I don't operate like that, unfortunately,my bills don't stop just cos its winter,so if you want to drop out, then I'm afraid I won't be back in spring".
If you let 1 stop for winter, they'll all try it.

yes I agree peter, what I mean is I don't let it happen so much any more, the fuller the round the more choosy you can be, and yes I don't let it add up in most cases nowaday's as you are correct it is a sure way to lose a customer.

what I really mean is someone building a round is bound to have higher numbers than an established round, I certainly did when I started

Another took 3 months cos they live in london she payed me 6 months in advance  Shocked
Topped the best excuse yesterday a new couple moved in a previous job got money 2 times no probs then took 3 months to get £10 caught them in yesterday then the lady said a neighbor told her the windows where payed up for a whole year by previous owner so she thought they where free  Huh?  Shocked thats a big pile of smelly stuff or shes in cookoo land  Grin

Iv always done new jobs once for 1st 8-12 months till you get to know them then 2 or 3 times max depending on price cos I hate collecting high amounts messers are not hard to work out.

2cleans without payment then no clean until payment recieved.i find its only the odd one or two.that way they dont have a big bill to pay and i dont lose much money if they "bump" me!

last year i wrote off £36-50p.not much in the great scheme of things.

i do let it go to 3 or even 4 cleans for certain customers as i know they will pay promptly when i catch up with them with no fuss.

ive only lost the odd one or two through non payment but gained much more work over the course of the year.

regards

Most are ok with double treble hits. But the ones i find a pain are the young brigade 20/30 bracket. They have got this debt mentality .They brown me off.....The older generation hate debt and will be you on the day in most cases.

sorry, must have mixed a couple together, but you're right, if there is'nt a few quid lying around in the house, you're in dire straits. it used to wind me up when a 1.50 tops never had it, and when she wrote a cheque for 3 quid, to cover last month and this (not literally, 10 yrs back) she asked me to do downstairs, thus still being 1.50 behind. unbelievable. i dropped the whole street eventually as the're was a few like that and underpriced anyhow. there's probably 10 quid or so owed from that road, but small price to pay to be rid
