laptop with all my work on it has a virus I think, after logging on everything becomes unresponsive, can't get on the net, can't run an anti virus scan, can't save my work to usb pen,

I did open another user account and I was going to save my work to pen and delete my account in the hope it would get rid of the virus,

I an going to kill that laddie of mine twice I have caught him on my laptop this week and low and behold another computer goosed Roll Eyes he is a ruddy jinx that laddie

some people really are jinxed- i knew a guy who broke every car he ever sat in,snapped a handbrake lever clean out the floor on a brand new VW van. he also   once blew an engine AND  a gearbox up at the very same time too . known to  all as "jinxie"

Did you manage to log on and save your work?

In future, I'd have a password protected account for yourself and one for your son. That way (hopefully) any viruses will be contained to your son's account.

Suppose this is where I have to try and step in... I'm sure I remember you recently fiddled about with installing Linux (Ubuntu) on your netbook or were at least looking into it. If you still have the disk you created for that then pop it in, boot it up and you should be able to access your hard drive and retrieve your files. If you don't have a Linux disk then download one on another computer if you have access to one.

Once you've retrieved all your files, I think it'd be safer to wipe the virussed up laptop and start again.

Hi craig thanks and mike for trying, yes i did have linux, on the pen I am trying to save work to, I deleted it. but to be honest that didn't work to well on the netbook anyway, not sure if i did it all correctly. I will attempt to save my work to cd as that seems to still work, then try wipe it all, my laptop has a recovery drive on it, i.e. c drive, edrive recovery and f drive cd/dvd drive, not sure how to use it though

I wasn't meaning you install Linux on your laptop, merely use it to access your work files and save them safely. Hopefully burning the stuff to a CD will work...

To access a recovery drive, you should be told on startup right at the very, very beginning what key to press. Sorry I can't be precise but I'm lucky in that my computers don't go boobs up. Yet, anyway...  Wink

ok thanks for the suggestions so far, saved my work to disc, deleted my account but that hasn't helped any, I can't figure how to wipe the c drive and start again, when I try anything the laptop becomes unresponsive, currently using my pc that hasn't been used in at least a year and this isn't much better

If you got a Windiws CD with your laptop boot up from it and follow the instructions to reinstall. Make sure you format the hard drive first but after that it's all plain sailing. Usually...
